The end of the monsoon brings a new threat

The end of the monsoon season brings new dangers in the form of a new hike in pirate hijacking attacks. The last six months saw a total of 130 attempted hijacking which has already surpassed the previous years figures by 19.

Heavy swells and strong winds associated with the monsoon season cause a marked reduction in hijacking attempts every year but as soon as the monsoon season nears an end, an increased vigilance by all captain of the ships navigating these waters is a must.

The anti-piracy combined task force based in Bahrain, headed by the Turkish commander Rear Admiral Caner Bener has been focused on combating pirate hijacking. Commander Bener stressed on prior preparation and an increased vigilance of marine merchants round the clock. The merchant ships are strongly advised to adhere to a safe corridor through the gulf of Aden.

With the monsoon ending soon, it's widely believed that the pirates will come out in force and the number of attacks could surpass the ones seen in the last 12 months. More than 30 ships from 16 countries continue to patrol and safeguard the gulf waters against possible pirate attacks but the resolve shown by the pirates continues to make the task undertaken by the sea police a mammoth one.
